Baccarat History

The word Baccarat comes from an Italian term, "baccara", meaning zero. This refers to the zero value given to all of the face cards and tens. It is the most popular casino game in Europe and is enjoyed by all kinds of people, be it in prestigious royalty events or even local cafes. The first baccarat was played using Tarot cards dating back 1500’s. While Baccarat originated in Italy around 1490, it became the choice for the French nobles by the early 1950’s.

Baccarat evolved into the French game "Chemin De Fer", which translates as "Street of Fire". The French game introduced the words "Banco" – which means they are betting the total value of the bank’s funds and all other bets are withdrawn. There are also other words that were used and eventually evolved in this game. The term "Cheval" means other players at the table may bet on either hand, while "Non" is for standing, and "Carte" means the player would like one more card. The French terms used in the game were adopted by a lot of American casinos which gave baccarat glamorous expressions.

European Baccarat is another adaptation but also adhere to the same rules as the other versions of this game. American Baccarat actually came from England and soon became popular in South America. The variation that we are playing today actually came from the Capri Casino in Havana, Cuba. When Baccarat was first brought to Nevada in the 1950’s, local casinos attempted to instill the glamor associated with the European game.

In the past, playing Baccarat is heavily guarded. Gamblers used to be in a tight roped-off area secured and monitored by casino securities. A number of casinos have installed what we now know as Mini-Baccarat which is a smaller version of the Baccarat game. It is played on standard blackjack-sized gaming tables using the same rules. The dealer, who is responsible for handling the cards, staffs the table. The layout is still patterned to the regular Baccarat table and each of the seven seat positions corresponds to a number and betting box with spots for banker, player, and tie. Mini-Baccarat is played fast and is an ideal place to get familiar with the game since it lacks formality. While Mini-Baccarat may not regarded in the same esteem as the parent game, it still enjoys great popularity with the amateur players.
