Basic Blackjack Strategy
Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games in the US. It is a banking game that aims to obtain a hand of cards closest to 21 and exceed the banker’s card points to win a bet. Blackjack is also known as 21 especially in most casinos in Nevada. However, the rules of blackjack may vary for other regions and countries, which have their own versions. Below are tips are for playing blackjack the American way.
Using the basic strategy
The basic blackjack strategy is all about having an optimal strategy for every hand you are dealt. It is based on the math of the game. Since there is limited possible number of hands versus the probable dealer up cards, the basic strategy needs memorization.
For years, the basic blackjack strategy has been tested and polished by means of computer simulations. Other players are even aided with charts. Only minor changes are done to the basic strategy when rule variations are considered. For instance, some casinos would permit you to double down right after splitting, while others would not. It is also adjusted when the number of decks is changed.
To let you understand more of the basic strategy, let’s take this as an example. You have assumed that the down card of the dealer is 10. You should think of what would happen if you get a 10. Only, do not forget the fact that there are 16 cards out of the deck that would have a value of 10.
If you are just a beginner, it is advisable for you to use the basic strategy chart. This chart would tell you how to play your first two cards according to the dealer’s up card. After that, you must learn the key decisions that you would have to make after taking a hit.
Translating the cards
To translate the cards, decode the basic strategy chart using plain English. You should be able to explain how to play hands with at least three or more cards.
For instance, if you have two cards, say 3 and 5, you then have a sum of eight. If the card asks you to hit, you should draw another. If after you have drawn you get a card of three, then you have eleven, and still if your chart asks you to play a double on 11 even though you can only play a double on the first 2 cards, you should play hit. Therefore, in translating the strategy suggested by the chart, we should use the word “otherwise” or “or else” when situations become different due to the multiple cards. If you are asked to translate entirely the example, it would be – if you got 11, you should play double or else hit.
Learning how to translate cards is essential especially when dealing with multi-card decisions for soft hands, hard hands, and even split pairs. There are still other strategies that are related to the latter. It is just important to remember that blackjack is not a hunch game, but a math game.
